Artists have different reasons why they paint. It's color that gets my juices going, as well as the contrast of light and dark. Who of us doesn't pause seeing the glaring sun break out of dark grey storm clouds, or the first bright green of spring? Who doesn't say to a companion "Wow, look at that!"

I don't compete with photographers in representing a scene exactly. I like the challenge, not of putting in the details, but of trying to capture the archetypal essence or emotional response to a motif. It may be a specific location, but it's the beauty of the natural world that I try to communicate.

And that's why I paint: "Hey, look at that!"
